Since I first posted on the raised beds about three weeks ago, there has been progress in getting them built and ready for planting with composed horse manure and soil. These latest pictures show five beds, three are 3′ x 20′ and two are 2′ x 16′, for a total of 244 square feet. This represents only a fraction of the raised beds that will be up and running during this growing season.
I also am in the process of laying down a straw mulch for weed suppression and because it makes it look tidy. The dogs clearly are enjoying the new mulch, I guess they are “straw dogs” now. And the chickens enjoy scratching under the straw for tidbits, underneath the feet of our omnipresent scarecrow, Sven.
Ripening kohlrabi are doing well in the beds, and newly planted tomatoes, soybeans, kale, lettuce and squash are going in. Here’s to hoping we don’t freeze at night!
